Latest Car Insurance for Europe News

The cost of car insurance has gone up by as much as 40 per cent in the last year, according to analysis from the AA.

The latest AA British Insurance Premium Index indicates that the average car insurance policy went up by around £892 between March 2010 and 2011. This 40 per cent rise represents the biggest increase ever recorded by the AA since it began tracking prices in 1994.

The news comes as a blow to motorists who are also facing the prospect of petrol prices rising by up to £1.50 per litre by Christmas. However, it might not be all bad news. The AA says that car insurance premiums should not continue to rise at the same rate throughout 2011.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said, "The record rises in fuel costs coupled with spiralling car insurance premiums is disappointing news, and is making driving unaffordable for many, especially cash-strapped young drivers.

"This is leading to more people withholding information when taking out a policy, or exaggerating personal injury claims to try to reduce their costs. But this simply piles on costs for insurers and results in yet higher premiums for honest motorists."
